Announcement - January 30, 2007
To The Readers:
First, Costanza Part II will be up tomorrow. Second, thanks for reading. Your support helped put this blog into a position to become something truly Large next year.
To that Large end, working and writing the book is eating my time. For that reason, we're moving for the short term from a once a week update to a once every ten days to two weeks update.
This will be a short term thing and, of course, where we can speed it up, we will. If we did it any other way, quality would go down.
PL
PS: I do have one question for the readers. Who the hell are you? If there's anyone out there who can draw me a picture of the average reader, shoot me a message or post a comment.

I can't swear to be an "average" reader, but I am a young lawyer. I stumbled across Tucker's site in law school (reading that while sitting in evidence class is excellent training in the control of facial expression) and now read all of the Rudius family of sites regularly. I don't know how people worked desk jobs before the internet.
I especially enjoy your site because the descriptions of various experiences I have also been through (law school parties, interactions with the bench and bar, etc.) are dead on. I often wonder while sitting in court if I am the only one in the room who notices what a completely ridiculous waste of time and resources the whole bullshit circus often is.
Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the book.

I would assume that I may be your average reader. Thirty, lawyer of some type some type of litigation most likely, male, often identified as a ten percenter.
Your reader base is probably 70% ten percenters.

I'm Boldn'Brazen, honey, and your number one fan.
Okay, maybe not really the latter, but definitely the former.

I'm an everyman I guess. I am not a lawyer, nor do I have more than a passing interest in the legal system, unless it involves me being charged with a crime. I read most of the Rudius sites, and find your stories to be some of the best written and most humorous overall.

I've been an avid reader for some time now. I am a senior in college, and an assistant engineer on a high-rise construction project. I grew up near Philly, and now I live in Boston. Like yourself, I feel that I fall in the "10%" group of people, for pretty much all of the reasons you have listed. i share your interests in music and alcohol, although I haven't yet experimented with anything else, although you put coke in a really interesting light. I look forward to your future posts, keep the good stuff coming!

Also a college student in an engineering major, as I suspect many of your readers are. I suspect that your writing is a bit too harsh to appeal to the average liberal arts student.

I may not be your average reader, but there are other readers out there apart from the law school/lawyer crowd. I stumbled on this site through Tucker's and while I love his writing, I now prefer your site.
I am a freshman business major and a lot of your writing resonates with me despite the fact that I have so much more still to experience in life. I will definitely cop the book when it comes out.

I read this site religiously and I think that it is by far the best site on the circuit. I'm an 18 year old male who is sick of high school and enjoys reading good writing. I'm looking to be a engineer/biologist. Actually, I have no idea what I want to be, but I don't want to be a lawyer. Thanks for the fantastic writing and entertainment. As most people on here, I'm a ten precenter.

I work at a Healthcare IT company in the midwest - 24 year old male who started reading Tucker Max a couple of years ago. Since then, I have been a frequent reader of yours and Robert Greene's site. One thing I get from this is a semblance of balance between pragmatism and the laissez faire attitude I have towards "the daily grind".

I identify with the 10% article so much that I can honestly say it touched me more than any other piece of writing I've ever had the priviledge to read. Keep it up, and I can't wait to read the book

Your writing strikes me, not because I necessarily have shared all of your experiences, but because I identify with many things in your writing that I have felt, but could never put into words, i.e. the vehemence to validity ratio.
Can't wait for the books and more updates, whenever they may arrive.

I'm 18 years old, I am a trumpet performance major at one of the top conservatories in the world, and a composer who works against the popular edge of atonal, arythymic banality. I have always been incredibly disgusted with the sheer quantity of facades that people put on to deal with other people. Upon discovering this webring, I was delighted to find that there are other people out there like me, and knowing that has helped me become less of an elistist bastard, and more of a person just living life honestly. In short, you could say that your's and Tucker's writing helped me become a far better person than I think I would have become without it. Thank you for sharing yourself with the world.

I'm smart, but in that dime-a-dozen 120ish IQ sort of way. I'd like to think I have somewhat decent people skills so I can relate to your depictions of being trapped with all the social retards.
I haven't done as many drugs as you have, but I've done enough, or been around people who have, that I can relate to the partying elements of your stories.

24, male, I work in Data support/Network operations. I have been reading Tuckers site for a few years and only found your stories through his site. My job has a lot of downtime so I search for things to read and keep me from falling asleep. Your stories are great and really keep me entertained. I check for updates daily. I drink more than most, I smoke reefer like its going out of style, I spend money I don't have and generally have a fuck it all attidude about everything. I don't take much of anything seriously and basically walk around like a zombie until the weekend but reading your site keeps me awake and sometimes even cheers me up during the week.

I'm a 17 year old on my last year of high school. I'm not in law in any way shape or form and i don't intend to be. However, I find that your site imparts some truly valuable lessons in life that i'm sure are going to serve me well later on and that no-one else would have told me.
Namely, "don't take things to seriously".
Not only that but you're a fantastic writer and i truly enjoy reading you're unique style and perspective. So thank you Philalawyer for the help you've given me.
I don't think I represent your average reader. However, I just thought i'd let you know that you hold appeal for even a young crowd. So long as their conscientious.
Looking forward to the book!

According the rest of the comments, looks like I'm atypical. I'm a 26 year old woman from the Midwest. No professional type career, but not a dead end job either. Was a big fan of Tucker and then took a look at what you had when your site first got added. The somewhat drier, more detached style of your work was a little difficult at first, but I've really come to appreciate each new entry. It's crack inside a mind I can identify with. Thanks!

Like most your readers, I have fallen into the trap of passive entertainment my whole life. My opinion is that well-written and articulate 'blogs' like yours are helping people realize that reading is a much better form of entertainment than television. Writing that promotes intelligent and entertaining dialouge without being overly-scholarly is an important step in bridging the gap between career vidiots and people who are able to see behind the curtain. Saying your site is about being a lawyer is like saying Million Dollar Baby is a movie about boxing. Both have certainly helped me to view social relationships from a different angle. And to that I say thanks.
Posted by: Ian at January 31, 2007 11:53 AM
Your average reader? I don't think that "average" would describe anybody that reads your blog.
I am a Philadelphia resident as well, and have been for the last 17 years. I am graduating Drexel this year, and am a former UPenn student. I hail from Europe originally, however.
I currently work as a Network Administrator for an ISP. While that is my official title, I might as well be called "that guy that does everything with computers". I manage the network, security, VPN, servers, desktops, applications, active directory, email, etc.
So, like you, work has a tendency to keep me busy.

Your average reader: Just about anyone. My guess is predominantly in the law field, but I suspect a surprising percentage is outside of the law field. A common theme is most of us probably are disillusioned with "careers" and all that jazz.

It would seem the average reader is a 20-something male, well educated with some form of interest in writing that pierces social conventions. Even if it sometimes borders on disillusionment, your writing fills the function of being the literary beacon that answers the question "is it just me?" when we think about the hypocracy we encounter.
To put it differently, this crowd is more likely to have been amused by american psycho and fight club rather than by titanic.
Congrats on your successes by the way. Mark Twain said it best:
"Honesty is the best policy - when there is money in it."
Cheers!

23 year old Female, soon to be college graduate with a degree in English Writing, heading to graduate school there after to get a masters in English Writing so I can be an editor. I love reading your site because I can related to your exasperation with the maddening grind of things, with the over rated hype, and with all of the bull shit that could be so simple but isn't. It seems so pointless, but it's what we do. I work for a real estate company and find a lot of the same skeezy personality types you describe on a daily basis.
Finding people to relate to isn't too hard, but finding someone who can do it without sounding like a whiney bitch is hard. That's why I read your site and all the other Rudius sites bi-weekly. I started Reading Tucker's site about 2 years ago and have read all of the Rudius blogs as they've popped up.
I read you because you're the voice of our generation. As an editor in training, though a good portion of my training has been in classical literature, I keep my finger on the pulse of contemporary publications. I want to know what people are saying, what people are reading, how people are feeling and what they're relating to NOW. I think these sites get a lot of flack as being too pop culture, but even in the most vulgar, carnal, and depraved blogs I can see cultural relevance because these are the things that people do, say, think, and the way we are. So, congrats on the book; wish I could publish you.

28 year old criminal barrister from London. We have pretty much the same problems over here except we get to wear bat-man capes and pieces of horse's backsides on our head whilst in court. Your descriptions of absolute honesty in court have lead to some almost certainly career slaughtering temptations.

I'm a law student and half of my friends here read this site religiously...I would say that law students are defenitely part of your average readers. Especially the ten percenter article...it's great that someone wrote down what we're all thinking about all the damn people here.

You asked for responses describing what your average reader was. Here is one description.
I am a 39 y.o. white male. I went to an average (i.e., second tier) Los Angeles law school and work for an average insurance defense law firm. I, along with my fellow associates, am best referred to by the acronym FABU - Fungible Associate Billing Unit. The work I do is boring, repetitive legal work that, in another time and place, would have been handled exclusively by secretaries, clerks and, at best, paralegals. We are assigned by the insurance companies who pay our bills. Typically, the clients don't like us and the insurance carriers regard us as a negative on their balance sheets and treat us accordingly.

"...slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off."

Fan of yours when you were on blogspot (heard about you from some guys I used to play cards with) and I had a job that I genuinely enjoyed before I fucked it up by coming to LS. Too humble to consider myself a 10% though I identify with just about everything you write.
Basically figuring out how to make $ with a JD and not put up with the firm bullshit.
You have a huge fan base amongst the few alphas at this LS.

I'm male. A 25 year old sheet metal worker, slowly taking over the family business. I'm very computer literate but I don't have much of a college education to speak of.
I read your page because it's highly entertaining and it gives me a different perspective of the inner workings of the legal system. I've sent you a message in the past to ask for advice on a traffic citation and you were helpful in telling me that I'm pretty much shit out of luck and not to try harder. It was the truth, and maybe I just needed to hear it from someone in the know.
As for where I picked your page up - A friend of mine introduced me to Tucker Maxx a long time ago, and I stumbled across your page from there. Keep up the good work, man. It's always entertaining.

22, college senior, environmental policy (don't ask me why). Stumbled across your old site when you posted in one of the Dimeo threads on Tucker's board. Dug it. Managed to get your site blocked at a Fortune 500 company this summer by reading it at work too much.

I am a 21-year-old legal assistant/paralegal in a small firm in Atlanta. As with most of your readers, I was first introduced to your site through TuckerMax. I have since stopped reading Tucker's site in favor of some of the other writers like yourself, DevilMonkey, and Bill Dawes. I find your writing style to be highly engaging, and you talk about subjects that I can easily relate to: the complete and utter bullshit that is the modern-day judicial system and heavy drug use. Keep up the good work!

26/M, Recent Law Grad doing IP work. Discovered your stuff one day during During Con Law and have been reading ever since. I can't thank you enough for making so many pointless discussions bearable and reassuring me that I'm not the only one that thinks this is all total bullshit.

I am 29 years old and a physican in the Midwest. I found your site through TuckerMax's site. I have sicne dated many attorneys, including a guy who was a partner at one of Chicago's largest law firms. He was a slime ball, just like many of the other attorneys I've dated!... Well, I can't stereotype everyone in your profession, but your site really rings true. The dishonesty, the bullshit, the fixation with image, "not smart enough to get into medical school...." You can tell I'm a bit bitter! Anyway, your writing is lovely, I can not wait for the book to come out.

I'm a CPA in my late 20s, and I work in a public accounting firm in Seattle. Oh yeah, and I'm male. I found your site the same way everyone else does, through Tucker's. His shit is hilarious, and just about insane, but between you and me (and everyone else who reads these comments) you're the better writer PL. I love your stories. I'm a drinker, and really not much of a partier these days (5 years removed from college) but your stories have inspired me. I think I'm going to go buy some Wild Turkey and some N2O and have a little fun...

Lawyer, early thirties, knew about the 10% rule before it became a denomination of which every lawyer thinks he is a part. Reading here and throwing scraps to an imprisoned Id who has long been caged due to the pursuit of the American Dream. Hunter Thompson in pinstripe shackles.

23-year-old male. I was a political science major at a Good College and decided at the last second not to take the law school track. Now I work an office job for a big tech company in the Bay Area.
For me reading your site was almost like reading Fight Club for the first time in that it pulled back the curtain. Not that anyone still believed that being a young wealthy lawyer was glamorous, but there's nothing I love more than laughing at our generation's dogged insistence that we are Making A Difference.

I am an eighteen year old female that was raised by two lawyers until my father decided to become a firefighter/paramedic at 43. He taught me to see beyond the pinstripe mirage to the soul (or lack thereof) inside the lawyer and not just write them all off. Lucky you, you get to write them off anyway. I'm currently taking a year off to live in Spain before I head back to the States for the glory of beer bongs and frat rats. I'm not sure if you have an "average reader" necessarily, and if I were you I wouldn't want one. How many reflections can a mirror handle before it shatters?

don't know if i'm your average reader, but i think i fit into the mould of your target audience. fascinated by human nature, how people are moulded by their environments, and the behaviour of idiots. so fascinated by odd nature of most people, but feel like i'm balanced precariously on the tightrope of normality, and afraid i could topple over the edge and become one of the deluded idiots i'm fascinated by, but yet despise.
your sight reminds my there are still sane people out there who see life for what it really is, and it feels very refreshing to read your stories, because not many people talk to each other about what you write about in your stories.
so thanks for doing this sight, and i'm looking forward to your book
